Vitality+ Rehabilitation and Wellness services at Oryx.

Our team utilise Oryx’s state-of-the-art in-house gymnasiums to expertly achieve post-surgery rehabilitation and effectively manage health conditions such as osteoporosis, arthritis, diabetes and progressive neurological conditions.

 

Oryx are proud to be offering residents an allied health and rehabilitation service Vitality+, with wellness centres based onsite at The Richardson in West Perth and at The Queenslea in Claremont.

What is the wellness package?

The wellness package is an additional provided by Oryx to our residents. We provide equipment in our gymnasiums for residents receiving one-on-one and group therapy. Our wellness packages have shown to preserve and improve participants’ levels of physical activity and mobility by addressing their specific impairments. It also facilitates unlimited access to our gyms during supervised hours and is a great way to encourage social interaction and engagement.

How does it work?

Every resident on a wellness package will first receive a comprehensive assessment. The outcomes of the assessment are communicated to the clinical manager and the family. Based on the outcomes, the resident will then receive one of three wellness packages:

  1. Falls and Balance
    This package is tailored to improve balance and function to reduce the risk of falls. Targets: Balance, Social interaction, Cognitive function, Physical function.
  2. Strength and Mobility
    This package is tailored for residents with orthopaedic conditions (eg. Rotator cuff, post surgery). Targets: Reduction in pain, Improved range, Increased strength, Physical function.
  3. Functionality
    This package is specifically tailored for residents with neurological conditions who usually require two practitioners to assist for mobility or transfers (eg. Parkinson’s Disease, MS, post stroke). Targets: Maximising function, Increasing strength, Capacity building.

Each package is designed and implemented by our allied health team using evidence-based practice. We have achieved amazing rehabilitation results for our residents since introducing this service in late 2020.

How is an Oryx wellness centre different from a typical ‘gym’ environment?

The onsite gymnasiums at The Richardson and The Queenslea focus purely on our senior clientele, creating an environment where you can feel comfortable and relaxed, and socialise with like-minded seniors. There is no loud music or sweaty young people – these are well catered for in other local gyms. Our gym sessions are guided by our on site allied health team that understand the health and wellness needs of seniors, with condition-focused exercise classes such as falls reduction and balance improvement, strength and mobility, including yoga and pilates that can be tailored to the physical capabilities of our residents.

How does the Wellness Programme work?

Every resident who elects to participate in a wellness package first receives a comprehensive physiological assessment by our physiotherapy team. The outcomes of the assessment are communicated to our clinical manager and the resident’s family. Based on the outcomes, the resident will then be invited to participate in a bespoke wellness package tailored to their specific needs.

Can I use the gym if I live in The Queenslea Retirement Apartments?

Yes. Residents of The Queenslea Retirement Apartments are entitled to unlimited complimentary access to our gymnasium at The Queenslea during supervised hours (subject to prior assessment by our team). In addition, residents can sign up for one of our bespoke wellness programmes. This is a great way to participate in social interaction and engagement with like-minded seniors. All Oryx residents are entitled to access our indoor heated swimming pool at The Richardson in West Perth.

Can you assist in recovery from a stroke, fall or surgery?

Yes. Recovering from a stroke, fall or surgery can be a lengthy process that requires patience, hard work, and commitment. Our programmes and dedicated professional staff provide the encouragement and motivation which, coupled with our team of allied health experts that specialise in recovery and rehabilitation, can assist you to achieve your goals by providing physical, occupational and social therapy that is specifically tailored for your individual needs. We are proud of the results we have achieved for our residents since commencing this service.

Do you have gym equipment that is appropriate for seniors?

Yes. Oryx provides equipment in our gymnasiums that is specifically designed for and caters for seniors with mobility or cognitive challenges. This equipment is designed for use by seniors who might have diminished sensory and cognitive capacity and/or grades of physical weakness. Our equipment can assist with rehabilitation after corrective surgery or stroke, and is utilised to support our proactive prevention programmes that target illnesses, diseases and other chronic conditions common to seniors, such as arthritis, rheumatism, osteoarthritis, neurological conditions and forms of dementia including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, vascular dementia and Lewy body disease.

Do you have fitness and rehabilitation programmes for seniors?

Yes. Oryx provides programmes that are specifically designed for seniors, whether they are in exemplary health and seeking to maintain their fitness levels, or are experiencing sensory or cognitive change and physical weakness; or forms of dementia including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia or neurological conditions. Our small group sessions are designed to encourage socialisation. For example, seniors with cognitive impairment can benefit from musical engagement such as our ‘silent discos’ via music coupled with clear instructions played through individual headphones.

Can your gymnasiums cater for residents living with dementia?

Yes. Oryx provides equipment in our gymnasiums that is specifically designed for and caters for seniors with mobility or cognitive challenges. Our staff are trained and have experience working with seniors and the various conditions typically associated with ageing. Our wellness packages are specifically tailored for each resident and can cater for those with dementia including residents with neurological conditions who may require two practitioners to assist for mobility or transfers – for example Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s, Lewy body, Multiple Sclerosis, post-stroke and post-surgery rehabilitation.

Do I have to join group sessions?

No. You can elect to receive either one-on-one or group therapy, or if you sign up to a Wellness Package. Group sessions are held with like-minded seniors. If you do seek to increase your socialisation, our Wellness Packages facilitate unlimited access to our gyms during supervised hours and are a great way to encourage social interaction and engagement with like-minded people and other residents. Residents of The Queenslea Serviced Apartments can also access our gyms during supervised hours, subject to prior assessment by our team.

Do you provide Hydrotherapy or Acquatherapy for seniors?

We have a heated indoor swimming pool at our Wellness Centre and our wellness programmes that can incorporate regular pool therapy for seniors. Physical therapy in our heated pool can assist to treat various types of injuries and diseases, and can assist with recovery from pain, physical disorders and illnesses, and is a popular treatment for our residents with neurologic and musculoskeletal conditions. Key goals of our pool therapy are muscle relaxation, improving joint motion and reducing pain. Residents of The Queenslea Serviced Apartments can also sign-up to access our heated pool at The Richardson.

Can you help me manage my chronic pain?

Yes. Our physios have the clinical expertise to educate residents with chronic pain and guide them through a supervised exercise program, setting appropriate goals for their needs, and desires to enjoy a better quality of life, and enhancing the program as these goals are achieved. We pride ourselves on our ability to offer reassurance to residents who fear that exercise will increase their pain. Our Wellness Centre at The Richardson aged care includes a heated indoor swimming pool and our wellness programmes can incorporate regular pool therapy which can be highly effective for seniors during ongoing pain.

Can Oryx’s wellness packages demonstrate tangible results?

Can I access Private Health Insurance Rebates to cover the cost of Oryx’s Wellness Packages?

You might be eligible for Private Health Insurance or Private Health Fund Rebates (such as HBF, BUPA, Medibank and HIF) for Acute Care Packages, and HICAPS is available at both The Richardson and The Queenslea Wellness Centres. Please ask the team at our gymnasium for more information.
