Sharing Beds with the Needy
Those in need will have the luxury of some of Perth’s best bedding thanks to a partnership between Western suburbs-based aged care provider, Oryx Communities and Bayswater-based domestic violence support network, Starting Over Support Association.
After its purchase of 5-star hotel The Richardson, Managing Director Nita Peploe needed to find good homes for over 80 high quality king-sized and single beds. With its refurbishment to aged care, new special-purpose bedding will need to be purchased and installed.
After reaching out to her network, Ms Peploe was put in touch with Debbie Mason, Manager at Starting over Support Association. Her organisation assists 10 to 15 families per week who have become homeless, back into independent accommodation.
“We rely completely on donations to provide all the essentials for those who need to get back on their feet,” she said.
“When we heard about this amazing offer, we jumped at the chance to secure high quality beds for our families.”
Working out of their warehouse in Bassendean, Debbie manages a team of volunteers who collect and sort donations from kitchen-wares to furniture.
Ms Peploe was thrilled that the beds would go to such a worthwhile charity.
“Ultimately, if we can help those who are less fortunate, this is a win-win situation.”
The Richardson Hotel closes for business on 16 December and will reopen in July 2018 as Perth’s premium aged care facility.
It will feature 92 units across 8 floors and will retain the hotel ambience that esteemed British architect, Sir Terry Farrell intended when he designed the building in 2005. While the five-star styling and hotel amenity including indoor pool and spa will remain, all rooms will be fitted with additional features to accommodate aged care requirements.
