Celebrating 100 Remarkable Years: The Inspiring Story of Dr Lais Grewar

At The Richardson, we had the privilege of celebrating a truly extraordinary milestone as resident Dr Lais Grewar turned 100 years old.

Reaching a century is a remarkable achievement in itself, but Dr Grewar’s life story is one of determination, resilience, and pioneering achievement that has left a lasting legacy.

Breaking Barriers in Medicine

Born in South Australia before moving to Western Australia as a young girl, Dr Grewar developed an ambition early in life to pursue a career in medicine. She attended St Joseph’s Convent in Kellerberrin from the age of seven and dedicated herself to her studies throughout her childhood and early adulthood, determined to become an anaesthetist.

Her perseverance paid off.

In what was then a predominantly male profession, Dr Grewar became Western Australia’s first female anaesthetist. She has spoken of the challenges she faced early in her career, with some male colleagues questioning whether she would succeed. Rather than allowing these obstacles to deter her, they strengthened her resolve.

Dr Grewar went on to become a highly respected paediatric anaesthetist at Princess Margaret Hospital and was later invited to London to complete her Fellowship of Anaesthetists—an outstanding achievement that reflected her expertise and dedication to the profession.

Her story remains an inspiring example of perseverance, excellence, and breaking barriers for future generations of women in healthcare.

A Life Well Lived

While medicine played an important role in her life, Dr Grewar has always embraced a wide range of interests.

She enjoys classical music, attending concerts, visiting the theatre, and has a lifelong love of animals—particularly dogs. She has also remained committed to maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle.

Now part of The Richardson community, Dr Grewar continues to participate in regular exercise classes and enjoys walking with fellow residents. Her enthusiasm for staying active reflects the importance of maintaining physical health, social connection, and purpose throughout life.

Celebrating an Incredible Milestone

Celebrating Dr Grewar’s 100th birthday was a wonderful occasion for residents, families, and staff alike.

Her remarkable journey reminds us that every resident brings a lifetime of unique experiences, achievements, and stories that enrich our community. At The Richardson, we are proud to celebrate these stories and honour the individuals who have helped shape our society.

We extend our warmest congratulations to Dr Grewar on reaching this extraordinary milestone and thank her for continuing to inspire everyone around her.

Happy 100th Birthday, Dr Grewar.
