Love the skin you’re in – self care tips for the elderly
‘Wrinkles only show where smiles have been’ – Mark Twain
As a society we can get a little fixated on the signs of ageing. But, rather than regretting grey hair and wrinkles we should be celebrating the gift we have been given – a long life!
We have put together a fun list of suggestions to let you love the skin you’re in… that little bit more.
Start your day on a positive note
Whether you’re an early-riser or prefer to lay-in, practicing self-affirmations when we wake can have a positive impact on our mental well-being and improve the way we think and feel about ourselves.
To help introduce this practice to your morning routine you could try switching your regular alarm to an inspirational ‘Quote of the day’.
Residents at The Richardson start their day on their own terms – the way they wish. Some prefer to rise early and head down to the courtyard for some fresh air while others prefer breakfast in bed. Our Lifestyle team members are busy taking small groups of residents out on daily morning walks too.
H2O
Water is essential for our health and vital for a balanced diet. A minimum intake of 8 glasses of water per day is recommended to remain hydrated. However, it can be hard to keep an eye on your water intake, especially during winter.
To help you keep track, download a water drinking app to remind you when it’s time to drink and use a drink bottle with measurements to help monitor how much water you consume throughout the day. Care staff at The Richardson ensure our residents remain hydrated with fresh water jugs provided, refilled and checked throughout the day.
“You are what you eat”…
How many times have we all heard this little nugget? It’s true that many foods contain nutrients that can, not only make our insides healthy, but also aid the condition of our skin, hair and nails. Eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants can give you glowing skin, healthy hair and slow the aging process.
Chef Javier, at The Richardson, changes the 4-weekly, rotational menu seasonally to incorporate the freshest, nutrient-rich produce for our residents and the meals served in our restaurant and café. Try incorporating some superfoods into your diet with these recipe ideas to help you look good from the inside out.
A little pampering goes a long way
Now that we know what to put into our bodies, let’s consider the things we can do at home, to help our bodies glow.
There are a plethora of homemade face masks to help your skin look its best. Or try creating your very own sugar scrub to exfoliate and moisturise your skin, using 3 simple ingredients:
1 Cup of Coconut Oil
2 Cups of Raw Sugar
8 – 10 drops of your favourite essential oil.
Spoon into a glass jar and store for yourself or add a ribbon and give to a loved one as a gift.
And remember, pampering isn’t only for the ladies, health and beauty sessions feature regularly on The Richardson lifestyle calendar and are a favourite of both our male and female residents – as is our popular in-house wellness centre and hair salon that is exclusively for our residents.
Today’s moments are tomorrow’s memories
Don’t shy away from the camera… capturing special moments (or just day-to-day activities) will allow you and your loved ones to relive times shared together and provide memories for future generations to celebrate. Rather than keeping your photos in your camera roll (as so many of us now seem to do) make the effort to print them out or create a photobook for your grandchildren to enjoy.
At The Richardson, we use CareApp to send happy snaps of our residents to their loved ones. Sharing daily photos helps keep our families connected when they can’t be there.
Celebrate yourself and love the skin you’re in!
